Flea Market Chic

The Treasure Island Flea Market rolls into town the last weekend of every month. From bargain goods to food trucks to children's activities, this place is packed and perfect for the whole family. Summer came early and I happily dressed appropriately for the weather.

Maxi dresses are a must for the warmer months. I got this dress a couple summers back from a boutique in Santa Barbara. As it is slightly chiller by the water, I threw on a cardigan from Charlotte Russe.

Cute sandals are the best option for strolling through the flea market. I purchased these last summer from Ross. I love the detailing (and the bargain!).

I always pair a dress with some pretty earrings. I recently picked these up from H&M. They match with so many spring outfits!

If you ever find yourself in the Bay Area on the last weekend of the month, do yourself a favor and attend this flea market.

What did you do over the weekend?

The Best Products for Spot Cleaning Brushes

As you may have guessed from the title, this post is about products for spotting cleaning brushes. I have a couple favorites that are worth checking out. These are both affordable options and get the job done. As someone who have favorite shader brushes and needs a quick clean in between uses, I reach for these products regularly.

The first being the e.l.f. Daily Brush Cleaner. This spot cleaner retails for $3 and I picked mine up at Target; this products comes in one size (roughly 2 OZ). I spritz a little onto my brush and gentle wipe any old product residue left onto a tissue.

My other favorite spot cleaner is the Sephora Master Cleanse Daily Brush Cleaner. This is available in two sizes: 2 OZ and 6 OZ; at $8.50 and $15 respectively. The packaging has slightly changed since I purchased mine (the bottle looks a little different), however, I don't think the formula has changed. This product works wonders. I find it to be better than the e.l.f. daily brush cleaner and maybe worth the higher price. I just use the same method when using this product.

The Friday Roundup

I want to start sharing some favorite moments/foods/books/products on Fridays. In my opinion, it's important to reflect on the positive aspects of each week (especially in the times I don't feel so positive). I will most likely be sharing photos from my Instagram weekly. Let's get the ball rolling with four favorites from this week:

Planning: I am all about using a planner these days. If you read yesterday's post, you'll have a better sense of my true obsession with planning and decorating (hence the large quantity of stickers). I have spent entirely too much time recently shopping on Etsy. I can't get enough of these cute stickers.

Spring: California is in full bloom and I am loving every minute of it. Although I have a desire to move across the country and experience seasons, I always change my mind when spring rolls around. This is the place to be at this time of the year when the weather is still cold everywhere else. We are so fortunate to get to wear sundresses and get our fill out vitamin D!

Reading: It is crazy to be reminded that a book can change your life. I am still blown away by everything I learned from No More Dirty Looks. If you're intrigued, hop on over to my recent review

Waffles: To me, this breakfast symbolizes a lazy morning in bed. Whenever I have a few extra minutes, I whip up a batch of waffles. I particularly like these simple "churro" protein waffles. For two waffles: combine 1/2 cup Kodiak Cake Mix, 1/2 cup waffle, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder & 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon. I use this cute waffle iron. Don't forget a little maple syrup.

What have been your favorite bits from this week?

Simple Cleansing Micellar Water Review!

Over the summer I begged my friend Rita to send me Bioderma. My most sought after skincare product. Removing waterproof eye makeup has always been a daunting task for me. After reading copious reviews and watching people rave about this heaven-sent product, I was desperate to get my hands on it. Fortunately Rita sent me a bottle of Bioderma in the mail in August. I have treasured it ever since. I finally found it on Amazon.com in the fall and intended to repurchase it as soon as I used my current bottle up. I had seen other cheaper options on the market but they were only available in Europe.
A couple weeks back I began to see advertisements from one of my favorite brands Simple. They came out with a cleansing water?! I had to try it! I was reluctant to purchase this product as I am currently on a 100 Day Beauty Spending Ban. Although this is properly cheating on my ban (I'm including skincare), I went for it. My reasoning: my skin is important to me, Simple uses clean ingredients, and I really wanted to buy it (maybe not the best reason). Honestly I am so happy that I picked this up. It was a steal at $7.99 for 6.7 fl oz/198 ml (available at Target & Walgreens). My Bioderma would cost me $24 for 250 ml. So really my purchase was saving me money in the long run? Let's go with that.
Long story short I am a huge fan of the Simple Cleansing Micellar Water. For those of you who have never tried a cleansing water, it is a great way to remove all makeup. Apply some to a cotton pad to wipe off face makeup or allow the cleansing water to sit on your eyelids for a few seconds before wiping them clean. My preference is a cotton round that has an exfoliating side as well. I like the CVS Exfoliating Cotton Rounds. They are inexpensive and they have a gentle side (eye makeup) and an exfoliating side (face makeup). This product does not leave trace amounts of makeup on your skin unlike some gentle cleansers.

Have you tried the Simple Cleansing Micellar Water? If so, what are your thoughts?

Current Read: No More Dirty Looks

Have you ever read a book that has completely changed your life? I recently started reading No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt. Essentially this book is about the use of chemicals in the beauty industry and the issues that may arise. Cancer and birth defects are no joke.

I picked this up from my local library a few weeks back. Although this may sound dramatic, I knew as soon as I started reading it that my mind would be blown. The books focuses on the way regulation of chemicals works in the beauty industry (in the past and at present). They delve into what different chemicals are and why they are harmful to our health. Unfortunately there are such minimal regulations for cosmetic companies and they get away with ingredients with potentially harmful long term effects. It seems that the United States and Canada have the most lax rules and have only banned seven chemicals. There are few restrictions on cosmetic companies and product recalls are rarely done. This is because the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) cosmetics office has a budget that is less than 0.2 percent of the FDA's total annual budget and this office only has a staff of thirty. Therefore they have little resources to ensure the safety of cosmetics.
I was amazed to learn that laws are stricter in the European Union and they have banned 1000+ chemicals; in fact, the United States reformulates products they send to the E.U. (although they do find loopholes). Not only are these harmful chemicals being used but they also are not always listed on the products themselves. Scary right? The authors mentioned that through their research they learned that the dosage is a huge factor in determining safety. We may not be impacted by a product immediately but we could be using the same moisturizer for years and it may lead to serious health consequences down the road. Scary right?
The book goes on to discuss different categories of products, from makeup to skincare to perfume and even nail polish. They listed dangerous chemicals in products, alternative options and some do-it-yourself ideas.
Through reading this book, my perspective on beauty has entirely changed. I have picked up this book from Amazon to reread and have as a reference. I am still terrified by my exposure to these products but I intend to thoroughly go through my makeup and skincare products.

Five Lip Products for Spring.

Spring has sprung. Particularly if you live in California. Although we did not experience a proper winter, I am looking forward to the upcoming warmer weather. With spring comes brighter lip colors. We can put away our bold darker colors and hunt out vibrant options. Here are my five picks for this spring:

NYX Butter Gloss in Peaches and Cream: The texture of the NYX butter glosses is hard to beat. They are so creamy and of course, buttery. Peaches and Cream is the perfect color for spring. It is relatively subtle yet vibrant enough.

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain in Barcelona Nights: These Revlon stains are incredibly long-lasting and pigmented. They apply like a lipgloss and dry into a bold stain. Barcelona Nights is the ideal pop of color for these spring nights when the sun sets later or a night out.

MAC Lipstick in Chatterbox: Everyone knows the appeal of MAC lipsticks. They are incredible. This amplified lipstick is creamy and has great color payoff. Chatterbox is truly that pop of pink we all want for spring.

Maybelline Color Elixir in Breathtaking Apricot: I loved these last year and I am enjoying them equally as much this year. Breathtaking Apricot is my ultimate spring lip color. Coral is perfect as we transition into warmer months.

Maybelline Color Elixir in I'm Blushing: For a hint of pink, go for this Maybelline product in I'm Blushing. This is ideal for minimal makeup days in the spring.
