Tips For Living In A Small Apartment

TGIF! Joe moved in yesterday & I spent the whole day cleaning in preparation. New York City apartments are small and accommodating two people in a one bedroom apartment is tough. Over the past two months, I have come across a few strategies for maximizing your space.

Buy a bed with drawers underneath: This is my first and probably best tip. When we selected our bed, we chose one with drawers underneath. This bed can accommodate four drawers. We opted for two because we don't have enough space to pull out four drawers and have bedside tables. There is one drawer on each side towards the bottom of the bed. I plan to store out of season pieces in plastic containers in the open portion under the bed--if I really need something, I can move the bedside table.

Optimize closet space: Since I can't fit my workout clothes in my drawer, I am storing them on shelves inside the closet. I also purchased this shoe rack. It holds 20 pairs of shoes, doesn't take up a ton of space and doesn't require tools to put together! Also it's really affordable.

Maximize kitchen space: New York City apartment kitchens are tiny. To make the most of our space, I store cooking sheets right above the fridge. I also store muffin pans on the side of the microwave. There is a lot of dust in NYC apartments--they are old! I wrap up my pans in plastic grocery bags to keep them clean. It is not the most attractive but it keeps my supplies clean.

I am sure I'll have a lot more advice in a couple months!

Simply Stylist 2015 New York Fashion & Beauty Conference

Yesterday I attended the Simply Stylist New York Conference. This was my first blogging conference ever. I was thrilled to by invited by ShopStyle Collective [thanks guys!]. I only went for the afternoon portion, which included the brand experience & breakout sessions.

There were delightful treats & drinks available. I enjoyed a grapefruit cocktail and a cake pop!

One of the highlights of the brand experience was: The Glam App. This is essentially Uber for makeup artists & manicurists. They offered us manicures and makeup & hair touch-ups. I really enjoyed getting my fall appropriate manicure and my hair curled.

ShopStyle had a macaroon bar (yum!)

I attended two of the breakout sessions. The first was led by Madison Guest [she is Victoria Justice's stylist]. She spoke about celebrity styling & was incredibly inspiring.

The second breakout session I attended was How To Turn Your Website Into A Thriving Business. I was really excited for this session as my ultimate goal is to turn my YouTube channel & blog into my own little business. The speakers gave advice about gearing your content and social media around your audience.

I really enjoyed meeting some great people & learning from this event! Big thanks to ShopStyle Collective for bringing me.

How was your weekend?

Halloween Plan With Me [Video]

Happy Sunday! Sunday morning is my favorite time to sit down with a cup of coffee, my planner and stickers and plan my week! It's my Sunday ritual.

I am sharing my first ever Plan With Me. This one is extra special because it's Halloween this week AND my fiancĂ© moves here on Thursday! I am so excited to be sharing this with you and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Fall Foliage in Central Park

Yesterday I went over to Central Park for a run and was blown away by the beautiful fall colors.

I headed to my favorite running spot in Central Park: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir [the largest body of water in Central Park]. You can see the city peaking out as you run along the water. The overcast weather made for some epic photos, as you can see the sun peaking through the clouds in the photo above.

I love seeing the leaves change to all shades of orange, red and brown. There is so much beauty at this time of year.

Next I headed to the Conservatory Garden [see the first photo above]. The views were breathtaking and the whole area was so peaceful. The weather was absolutely perfect, around 72 F. I could not have asked for a better day!

Are the leaves changing where you live?

Cozy Fall Finds Under $75!

Happy Hump Day! I am slightly embarrassed to admit that the weather dropped 10 degrees earlier this week and I reached for my "winter" clothes. I know that it is far from winter outside but the California girl inside of me is shivering. When the weather gets cooler, all I want to do is cuddle up in an oversized sweater and plaid scarf. I've found a bunch of affordable pieces recently that I have to share.

For cozy tops I am loving this grey wrap sweater and oversized cream sweater. They are exactly my style. For slightly warmer days, I love a good
sweater dress with tights and black booties, finished off with a floppy hat and perhaps a scarf. I am also a huge fan of ponchos right now--I have two favorites right now. My favorite little tip for making any outfit fall appropriate is adding a scarf [I love the pop of mustard yellow in this one] and booties

What pieces are you wearing right now for fall?

Motivation Monday

Several years ago I took a yoga class. One of the things I love about yoga is the quotes and meaningful words that come from the instructors. One this particular day, our teacher had the most eloquent speech during our savasana. I remember jointing it down, word for word, immediately after class. Of course I no longer have his speech but the last line has always remained in my head. You are exactly where you were meant to be
I just finished up two papers that are due later today. Originally I assumed I would get them done on Saturday. Of course they took longer than I expected [I promise I didn't procrastinate] and I just wrapped them up. Initially I was disappointed because I haven't worked out in days, I haven't run errands or cleaned the apartment and I have a tough midterm on Wednesday. But then this quote popped into my head. I know I worked my hardest [I definitely felt bummed when I saw all the fun BeautyCon tweets and apple picking IG photos this weekend and felt totally left out]. I know I am where I was meant to be. I know everything will work out. I know I will fit in a workout and I won't fail my midterm. It is so important sometimes to realize that even if things don't seem perfect, we are where we are meant to be and things will work out for the best.
I hope all of your Mondays are going smoothly. Until next time...

5) Place cooked doughnuts on a paper towel covered plate
6) Brush each doughnut with apple cider, using a pastry brush

8) Coat doughnuts evenly in sugar mixture
9) Enjoy!

New York City: Two Month Update

After two months of living in New York City, I have learned a few more things. If you didn't catch my one month update, you can check it out here

Everything is either expensive or free: Everyone knows how expensive Manhattan can be. Food is expensive, rent is expensive--the list goes on and on. Fortunately you can also find a lot to do for free. There are a number of museums that allow you to pay as much as you like [so you can pay $1 or $5 if you want]. There are also tons of famous sights to see for free: Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park. Also I recently learned that New York City has an initiative called Shape Up NYC which offers free fitness classes in all five boroughs every day of the week! They offer quite a range and they get the job done. I am amazed at what New York City has to offer.

You have to work hard to make friends: I know it's never easy to move to a new city when you don't know anyone and make tons of friends. I guess I was blinded by the fact that I was starting grad school. I figured I would immediately bond with all the people in my program. Unfortunately most of them were already established here and had a solid group of friends. Although they were bubbly in class, none of them are looking for new friends. I was initially hurt when multiple people weren't available for months at a time to do something as simple as grab coffee. I had to come to the realization that people in New York aren't as quick to invite you into their circle of friends. It is disappointing and finding friends is something I'm still working on--there are ways to meet people here. You can do things on your own here without feeling strange. I go to coffee shops to study, check out new places and wonder through Central Park alone. I'm also planning to check out some Meetup events. They also have couple groups on Meetup that Joe and I are planning to check out! Yes making friends is hard but you just have to be patient.

Seamless is awesome: I'm kind of obsessed with the app Seamless. It's like the Uber of food delivery. Busy day? You can order food to be delivered to your apartment through the app and pay for it there [along with the tip]. It's super easy and I will be using it a lot this winter!

I wonder what I will learn in the next month!
