Last week my maid of honor and I hit up the Bite Beauty Lip Lab in San Francisco. The Bite Beauty Lip Lab is a shop where you can make custom lipsticks. They have three locations: New York, San Francisco, and Toronto. All locations offer two services–custom lipstick ($55 for one lipstick; $80 for two lipsticks) or bespoke lipstick ($150). I chose the bespoke–this option allows you to work with a lip lab artist to create two custom lipsticks in addition to receiving a lip lab exclusive lip kit.
I chose the bespoke option so I could make a custom lipstick for my wedding day as well as a fun brighter shade for my bachelorette weekend. The custom lipstick option only allows you to choose a shade from the available pigments, not create a custom shade.
Prior to creating the colors, my lip lab artist asked me what finish I wanted. For longer lasting lipsticks, she recommended a matte or cuvee (almost matte) finish for hours of wear. Luminous and sheer were also options. For both lipsticks, I chose cuvee–matte lipsticks are often way too drying for me but I also wanted something that will last on both occasions.
When creating these lipsticks, I started with my wedding day lip color. I knew this would take more time and thought. I aimed for a dusty rose shade–I knew this would suit my skin tone and give me the look I want for that occasion. My lip lab artist started by combining a rose shade and an almond shade. She scooped out a little of each and combined them with a small metal spatula on a piece of hard plastic. Honestly the process looked like someone mixing up an ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery. Anyone else eat a lot of Cold Stone in high school?
After she mixed each color, I applied it to my lips and decided if I liked it or if I wanted to adjust the shade. After ten attempts, we found my perfect dusty rose!
We moved on to the bachelorette lipstick. I went for a berry red. After three creations, I found my perfect shade. It’s flattering and makes my teeth look incredibly white. I wasn’t as picky with this shade, as it is for a fun and more carefree event.
Once my shades were selected, we chose scents. For my wedding lipstick, I went with violet. For my bachelorette lipstick, I opted for wild berry and vanilla [two scents is the max]. They also offer cherry, mint, citrus mango, coconut, and fresh citrus.
My lip lab artist brought her “recipes” behind the counter and worked her magic. She added different portions of various colors and melted them down to create the shades I had approved. Then she used a centrifuge to fully mix up the shades before she poured the liquid into two lipstick bullet shaped molds [one was a back up]. After seven minutes on a freezer, she popped the lipstick into its shell. Her only instruction was to wait 20 minutes before applying each lipstick.
The entire process took about 45 minutes. We did not feel rushed at all but we also went on a weeknight to the San Francisco location–much less busy than New York [I’m glad I was able to fit this in on my trip!]. The exclusive lip lab kit contained a full sized lip scrub, mini agave lip mask, and full sized lip primer–I’ll be using this on my wedding day.
All though this was a really fun and special experience, this is most likely something I will only do once. It was very fitting for my upcoming wedding and I recommend it to any brides!
Have you visited a Bite Beauty Lip Lab? Will you make a custom lipstick in the future?

This place is probably my favorite place to organize an event; large enough to fit a good amount of guests and small enough that you really feel like you're having an intimate event. I would suggest these wedding venues for anyone.
