Weekly Cleaning Routine

As a new(ish) homeowner, there’s a lot I’m learning about taking care of a house. One of the biggest differences between living in an apartment and house has been how much more you need to clean! Our house is ~1900 square feet while our largest apartment was 800 square feet. I still feel overwhelmed thinking about the bigger tasks, such as dusting the baseboards. Fortunately I do think I have a good handle on what needs to be done regularly. I thought it might be helpful to share my weekly cleaning routine so you can create a chores list for yourself.

Cleaning

DAILY

Vacuum (as needed): we typically run our robot vacuum or clean a specific area with our cordless vacuum. Do I vacuum everywhere? Nope. I typically hit the kitchen, dining/living room, laundry room, and bathrooms.

Wipe Surfaces: this generally happens everyday. We use the Arm & Hammer Disinfecting Wipes to clean our counters, table, coffee table, and desks. I strongly prefer not using harsh chemicals on areas we eat or touch often, which is why I love these disinfecting wipes. They also smell great!

EVERY TWO DAYS

Trash: We usually have to take out our kitchen trash and recycling every couple of days. Typically we have a lot more recycling, especially with all the online shopping that’s happened in the past year.

WEEKLY

Steam Floors: I won’t say we always do this weekly but we try to. We’ve had our steam mop for a year and it only requires water. It comes with reusable pads that are double sided and can just be thrown into the wash after use. Whenever I use it, I wonder why I don’t steam mop more often. It’s really easy!

Scrub Toilets: Not fun but necessary! Honestly my parents don’t think I do this often enough. Eek.

Disinfect Bathroom Sinks and Counters: This is pretty quick if you keep up with it. I clean the counters with my Arm & Hammer Disinfecting Wipes. I wipe down the mirrors with an all purpose spray and microfiber cloths. Finally I scrub the sinks with this cleaner. This is also a great opportunity to put away any extra products that ended up on your counters.

Laundry: the dreaded task that we do every Sunday. Joe is sweet and starts the laundry when he wakes up, which is always earlier than me. We usually have two or three loads. Honestly the hardest part is folding the laundry. Ideally we’d do it on Sunday nights but that doesn’t always happen :/ Oops!

OTHER TIPS

**Pro Tip** Find something you listen to while you clean. I personally like listening to a podcast or audiobook while I clean. My current favorite podcasts are Office Ladies and Bad on Paper.

**Pro Tip** Break your cleaning tasks into small chunks; set 10 or 20 minutes to complete a single task then move onto something else not related to cleaning.

Cleaning Schedule

This is where I’m at right now and I don’t always get it all done. Maybe this is more or less cleaning than you’re used to. I’m happy with my current weekly cleaning routine. I can do a more expansive list in the future, including monthly, quarterly, and annual cleaning tasks. Just let me know if you’d like to see it!
