If there’s one thing I’ve learned being a home owner, it’s that things add up. Quickly. There are so many unexpected costs that come with owning a home. From unexpected repairs to purchasing furniture, there is a lot that goes into maintaining up a home. I’ve found some tips and tricks that have helped me save quite a bit over the years. I thought I’d share some of the ways I save money around the house.

LAUNDRY & LIVING ROOM

Save on dry cleaning: For the more delicate pieces, I like to use Dryel to create the dry cleaning experience at home. It’s a fraction of the cost, saves you time and is so simple. Using Dryel will help you save big on professional services. Save yourself a trip to the dry cleaners and dry-clean in the comfort of your own home. Turn off lights: Save money and energy when you’re not in the room.

Upcycle: Try to recycle furniture and decor around your home. Whether it’s painting a coffee table or finding a new purpose for a bookcase, make the most of what you have before buying something else. When you do need to buy something new, hit up a thrift store, Craiglist, or Facebook Marketplace. Maybe you’ll get lucky and score a piece from a friend or family member.

KITCHEN

Buy staples in bulk: This is a great option, especially for items that last a long time. I love to bake so we buy flour, sugar, and butter in bulk at Costco. I also like to pick up staples that can serve multiple purposes, like baking soda and vinegar. We use both for cooking and cleaning.

Shop store brand: Often times grocery stores offer a generic house brand, which is equally as good. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods (360 brand) are prime examples. I’ve also heard good things about Aldi’s store brand!

Make your own carbonated beverages: We love sparkling water. We were spending a lot on cans and bottles of sparkling water – not to mention it was heavy to carry upstairs. Fortunately we picked up a Sodastream a couple years ago and it has been amazing. The only thing you need to repurchase is spare carbonater cylinders. The best part is: you get 50% off if you return your old cylinder. Also, Bed Bath & Beyond always has 20% off coupons (sign up for the emails). You can add on that coupon for additional savings!

Switch to reusable products: This may seem like a small savings but it’ll add up. Switch to reusable grocery bags at the store. Opt for cloth napkins over paper. Choose microfiber cloths over paper towels.

BEDROOM & BATHROOM

Sell your clothes: Not using that top? Sell it! Tired of those shoes? Sell them! I shared a thorough post on decluttering your closet earlier this year. Check out the section on selling your clothes, shoes, and jewelry.

Unplug unused electronics: Another easy way to save!

Track back stock: I think buying in bulk (for certain items) makes complete sense. I also often forget what I have and how much I have of it. As a result, I tend to overbuy. Recently I’ve been keeping better track of what I have and I’m saving a lot, especially in the skincare department. Also, it feels good not to have to store so much stuff!
