Autocamp Yosemite Review

Last month Joe and I went to Yosemite. I haven’t spent time in Yosemite so this was such a treat. I’m not big on camping. I like being outside and enjoying nature but I have back and sleep issues. Sleeping on the ground isn’t an option for me. I heard about AutoCamp Yosemite from a colleague and it sounded like a dream. All of the comfort of home out in nature. AutoCamp Yosemite is about three hours from our home in San Jose, which makes it the perfect weekend getaway. I booked three nights as a surprise for Joe. I initially booked Presidents Weekend in February but ended up rescheduling for Fourth of July weekend. If you want to learn more about what we did in Yosemite and my tips, check out my Yosemite travel guide.

ACCOMODATION

AutoCamp offers airstreams, luxury tents, and cabins. We opted for an airstream. Neither of us had ever been in an airstream and we were intrigued. I was drawn to it because it would allow us to have a comfortable stay. The website description says it all: “Sleep surrounded by nature, but with every possible comfort. Inside of a timeless 31-foot Airstream you’ll find a bright and airy sitting room and fully-functional kitchenette. In the bedroom, a queen bed with high-thread count linens is tucked under a panoramic window. A private modern bathroom offers a walk-in rain shower and spacious vanity area. Outside, relax with a glass of wine on your private patio, which includes a fire pit and dining area.” The airstream comfortably fit both of us. The couch folds out into a sleeper bed so another adult or two children could sleep there.

While we didn’t stay in a tent or cabin, they both looked nice. The tents have a bed, mini fridge, and fan. They don’t have a private bathroom but you can use the bathrooms and showers in the clubhouse (~5 minute walk away). The biggest downside to staying in the tents during the summer is the heat. It was mid to upper 90’s during our visit. We escaped to the air conditioning in our airstream during the hottest part of the day. With the tents, this isn’t an option. Although, you can hang out in the clubhouse, which has air conditioning. It really depends what you’re comfortable with. For us, that is the airstream.

AMENTITIES

Another perk to staying at AutoCamp is the amenities. The camp features a clubhouse, complete with a general store, bar, lounge, and pool. The general store has everything you need for a comfortable stay. You’ll find food, beer, wine, fire wood, s’mores kits and more. We even purchased a BBQ kit (see dining for more details). The bar and lounge are are great spots to relax, especially during happy hour. As I mentioned, the clubhouse also has showers available. Just outside the clubhouse, you’ll find a pool. The pool was the hot spot while we were there. It was packed with families. If you want to avoid the crowds, I recommend going around 6PM or so. Families start to take off for dinner. The pool was warm so it didn’t really become refreshing until the temperature cooled down.

DINING

To our surprise, there was food available at AutoCamp. There isn’t a sit down restaurant but there is hot food available for purchase. You can order from a small menu at the bar. We tried the flatbread and really liked it (although it was overpriced in our opinion). The clubhouse also features a bar, which seemed to have happy hour most nights (5-7PM). AutoCamp also has a general store, which sells pretty much anything you might need. You’ll find grab and go breakfast items, basic groceries (eggs, milk, etc.), cooking supplies (aluminum foil, cooking spray, etc.), beer, wine, soda, candy, snacks, and fire supplies (wood, fire starter, etc.). They also sell s’mores kits and BBQ kits.

We pre-ordered a BBQ kit in advance. I believe it was around $75 for our steak kit (for two people). Everything was ready to heat and eat. The steak was marinated and came with mixed vegetables, corn bread, and bread pudding. Each BBQ kit also comes with a pack of logs. You can also purchase fire starter and additional supplies in the general store. While everything was delicious, it was pricey. I recommend stopping at a grocery store for basics and picking up speciality items at camp.

VERDICT

I definitely recommend AutoCamp Yosemite and would visit again. I’m also interested in checking out some of their other properties, especially Joshua Tree. I like that you can be immersed in gorgeous setting but still have the comforts of staying in a hotel or condo. The clubhouse and pool really elevated the camp too.
